The Girl Beneath the Arch

theme · Awakening beneath a light that is not yet hers.

mira woke beneath an arch of impossible light. she did not remember arriving. she did not remember choosing. she knew only three things. the arch led toward the person she could become. the road changed whenever the market moved. and nobody, no matter how loudly they promised, could take the step for her. at first she believed the light belonged to the crowd. she believed the colours were theirs to give, theirs to take. it took her a long time to understand that outside belief could brighten a path — but only her feet could cross it.

The Weight of Smallness

the walls in this country grew whenever she measured them. the ceilings retreated. even the lamps hung farther away than they had the day before. she was told, gently, that this was how the country worked. it was not built for her size. she should wait until she grew into it. she waited a long time. she did not grow. she took a step anyway. the walls stayed tall. the step still counted.

The Forest of Other Voices

the trees in this forest did not have leaves. they had voices. each one belonged to someone else — a parent, a stranger, a person she had wanted to impress, a person she had never met. when the market moved, the voices grew louder or quieter, but they never went away. she was told, kindly, that the loudest voice must be the truest. she listened for a long time. eventually she noticed that the loudest voice was almost never her own.
