the forest was loud today. every tree wanted to tell me who i was becoming. i noticed something small. the voice i trusted most had a familiar accent — my own. i had just forgotten it under the others.
the light returned, but that is not the part i want to remember. i want to remember that i was still here before it did.
i thought persistence meant never stepping backward. that was vanity. persistence is learning the road well enough to return without pretending you were never lost.
the walls were still tall. i took a step anyway. no one clapped. the step still counted. i am learning that this is what a first step is: unwitnessed and small and enough.
someone told me today that the crowd was my wind. i wanted to believe them. later i noticed the crowd changed direction three times in one hour, and i had not moved. i was the one who chose whether to move.
the light dimmed today. i noticed i was still standing. this seems small but it is the first time i have separated the light from the standing.
i did not choose to arrive here. no one asked. the arch was already lit when i opened my eyes. i think this is what everyone means when they say they were born.
